Tottenham are leading the race for Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to the Daily Star.

They claim that Spurs have held talks with the 22-year-old who they have identified as the man they want as back-up to Harry Kane next season.

Gomez has a £43m release clause and the report claims that Premier League competition is waning, with Liverpool said to be “cooling” their interest and West Ham “admitting defeat” over the player after being told he wants Champions League football.

Celta have signed a replacement already in Gabriel Fernandez but may want to wait until after the Copa America, which could boost his value.

Good move for Tottenham?

Without a doubt. He’s got age on his side and was involved in 18 goals for the La Liga side this season, scoring 13 and adding five assists. The Uruguay international has been involved in 41 goals in 75 appearances for Celta Vigo and unlike Fernando Llorente he should improve and his value will undoubtedly increase if he succeeds at Spurs.

Likely to happen?

Is he prepared to play as back-up to Kane? A lot depends on his confidence in his own ability. If he can go to Tottenham and prove himself then he’ll get games and Tottenham can offer him Champions League football. Pochettino would surely relish the opportunity to work with someone like Gomez and he could be at exactly the right level to solve the striker conundrum that has plagued Spurs for the last two seasons. A lot will depend on his price. Daniel Levy is not going to be paying £43million for him.
