Marseille have offered West Ham the chance to sign Netherlands international Kevin Strootman on loan in the summer, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claims that Everton and Manchester United also have the opportunity to snap up the 29-year-old midfielder as Marseille aim to “cut costs” after a poor season in Ligue 1.

Marseille have one game to play this season and will either finish in fifth or sixth place in France’s top-flight.

They signed Strootman from Roma for £23million last summer but it seems as though the Dutch central midfielder will be on the move once more in this transfer window.

Good move for West Ham?

Manuel Pellegrini should look at adding some strength in depth to his central midfield options because away from Mark Noble, Declan Rice and Jack Wilshere, his options aren’t amazing.

Rice has also been linked with a move away from the London Stadium and Wilshere’s injury record means that he is not reliable enough to go into the next season with what the Hammers already have.

Strootman is a good player but he is just as injury-prone as Wilshere and is not really much of an upgrade on what the Irons already have.

The ex-PSV midfielder is very experienced but the fact that Marseille are trying to get rid of him after just one year speaks volumes and West Ham should really turn down their offer.

Likely to happen?

West Ham have a thing for signing players that are experienced and players that have poor injury records, so Strootman is just the kind of player fans should expect Pellegrini to sign in the summer.

It obviously wouldn’t be great but there’s just something that says this is the kind of player that suits what the Hammers always end up looking at.
