Maarten Stekelenburg should look to quit Everton in the summer transfer window after it was reported that the Merseyside club is closing in on signing Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

Football Insider has reported that Lossl, 30, is set to undergo a medical with the Toffees ahead of a free transfer to Goodison Park.

Lossl has spent the last two seasons with Huddersfield but his contract expires this summer and it appears as though Everton have moved fast to sign up the Denmark international.

It is understood that Everton director of football Marcel Brands wanted to sign a new back-up goalkeeper in the summer with Jordan Pickford the clear No 1 choice at Goodison, but that must spell bad news for Stekelenburg.

The Dutchman, 36, has been Everton’s No 2 this season, with him appearing on the bench as an unused substitute in every Premier League fixture.

However Everton’s attempt to sign Lossl look as though he is being signed to potentially replace Stekelenburg.

If that is the case then the 6ft 6 (transfermarkt) colossus needs to pack his bags and quit Goodison Park in the summer because what is the use of him hanging around as third, or even fourth, choice goalkeeper.

The Liverpool Echo has reported that Joao Virginia is going to be promoted to the senior side after an impressive campaign for the Under-23s, so that might mean Stekelenburg drops further down the pecking order.

Stekelenburg has been a great servant for the Toffees but at the age of 36, it is time for him to have one last go at playing regularly elsewhere.

A player of his experience should have no issues with finding a new club.

Everton’s £30,000-a-week [Spotrac] No 2 has earned 58 caps for the Netherlands and made over 400 club appearances for the likes of Everton, Ajax, Fulham and Roma.

Quitting the Toffees in the summer will surely be the best move for everyone involved.
