Chris Sutton claimed Celtic would give Rangers a guard of honour if the boot was on the other foot.

The outspoken pundit shared on BBC Radio that Gers supporters had been bugging him for the last 24 hours after he claimed on his personal Twitter account that Rangers should do the right thing when they face Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday.

Sutton reechoed that view before claiming Celtic would definitely give the Gers a guard of honour if Steven Gerrard’s side had lifted the league title.

“Well you know what has bugged me is Rangers fans,” said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live (18:57, Sunday May 5th).

“I’ve had a hard time on social media in the last 24 hours because Celtic eight in a row, won the title and I suggested Rangers should do the right thing at Ibrox with a guard of honour for the champions for Celtic when they come to town and Rangers fans have been giving me hell.

“You understand that Bruce right? Do the right thing?

“Well of course they (Celtic) would (asked if the Hoops would give the Gers guard of honour don’t you agree with that?

“Come on respect the champions.”

OPINION

It’s highly unlikely Sutton would be going on about a guard of honour if it was Celtic having to do one for the Gers. Sutton’s connection to the Hoops is well-known so of course he has no problem saying it’s the right thing to do when it’s Rangers that have to do a guard of honour. Sutton claims with confidence that Celtic wouldn’t hesitant to line-up to applaud Rangers in order to show them respect if they were champions, but in reality that doesn’t seem likely. The two sides have a fierce rivalry so of course both are going to hesitant about showing the other respect as it isn’t going to go down well with supporters. However with that said, it will look disrespectful if the Gers ignore the tradition and don’t bother with the guard of honour. Rangers should just go along with and use it as motivation for their 2019/20 campaign. If any Gers players really have a problem with clapping Celtic’s title-winning squad they should let next season’s performances speak for themselves.
