Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has claimed Jermain Defoe could score 40 goals in next season’s Scottish Premier League and that couldn’t be further away from the truth.

Defoe is currently on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth at Rangers and has played a back up role to Colombian Alfredo Morelos in the second half of the season.

Redknapp told the Evening Times: “Of course, he could score 40 goals next season.”

The former Premier League manager went on to add: “Without a doubt. Jermain will always score goals. He has such amazing movement and he is an amazing finisher. Given the chance he will stick them away and I’d expect him to do that next season.”

There is no doubt that Defoe has been an immense finisher throughout his career and if he started every single game in his prime then that tally could be a possibility.

In reality, the 36-year-old is towards the end of his career and his role is mainly support based to the younger strikers at the club.

Defoe has scored six goals so far this season in 12 appearances which have been dominated with minutes off the bench under Steven Gerrard.

The Gers have been linked with moves for attackers with that being a clear area Gerrard would like to strengthen. This would suggest Defoe will have to get used to more time on the bench and Redknapp couldn’t be any further away for his target for the forward.
