Boxer Tony Bellew has delivered his backing to Leeds’ promotion push, suggesting that they deserve to be back in the Premier League because they are a big club.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will have to do things the hard way after only being able to secure a place in the play-offs following a disastrous Easter weekend that saw them lose twice on the bounce.

But Bellew wants United to make it back to the top flight as soon as possible.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “The sooner Leeds are back in the Premiership the better!

“The big clubs need to be in the Premier League.

“Good luck to them.”

OPINION

Leeds get a lot of stick from opposition fans, but Bellew’s attitude is the right one. It’s almost as if supporters are jealous go the club’s history, but the fact is that hey are a huge team, and one full deserving of a place at the top table. You cannot deny, no matter who you support, that having this Leeds team, with Bielsa at the helm, would make the Premier League a more interesting proposition, and it would be good to finally see them face off with their rivals of old on the biggest stage. Who wouldn’t want to see Bielsa on his bucket at Old Trafford? They may have faltered at the vital moment, but Leeds still have a chance at redemption, and if they cab pull themselves together and approach these play-offs at full tilt, they are surely favourites to make it over the line, regardless of their recent dip in form.
