Rangers want to sign Jonathan Klinsmann as back-up for Allan McGregor, according to the Scottish Sun.

The 6ft 4in keeper is the son of German legend Jurgen Klinsmann and is out of contract and frustrated with his lack of first-team chances at Hertha Berlin.

He’s also had a fallout with the Hertha goalie coach, who criticised him earlier this season for having “too much American in him” and needing to up his work ethic. Klinsmann grew up in California.

His father, Jurgen, claimed his son had what it takes to be a first-choice keeper in the Bundesliga.

“Jonathan has the class to be a No?1 in the Bundesliga or second division next season,” Jurgen Klinsmann said.

OPINION

We can take Jurgen’s comments with a pinch of salt as he’s a bit biased. But Klinsmann is an interesting option for Rangers and the goalie would probably relish the chance to work with Gerrard. Klinsmann junior grew up in America and is an international for the USA Under-23s. Ironically, he was accused of having ‘too much American’ in him by Zsolt Petry, the goalie coach at Hertha Berlin. We’re not too sure what this means – possibly being too laid back – but it would be something for Rangers to take stock of. Gerrard’s side have history of signing players with bad attitudes and that’s not worked out well for them. Number one keeper McGregor is 37 now and Rangers will be looking for a back-up who’s capable of taking the gloves in the near future. This is definitely one to watch.
