Rangers are plotting a loan swoop for Premier league striker Andre Gray, according to the Evening Times.

The report claims that Rangers have a big decision to make over Alfredo Morelos and if they sell him they will have funds for Steven Gerrard to add new players.

Kyle Lafferty is said to be on his way out and while Rangers have Jermain Defoe, replacing Morelos would be a key priority.

27-year-old Gray is a wanted man at Ibrox, although the report says wages could be a problem.

Gray is reported to be on £70k-a-week at Watford and was the club’s record signing when they bought him from Burnley in 2017.

OPINION

This is an ambitious target for Rangers. Gray has scored nine goals in 31 games across all competitions for Watford this season, and has been thrust into the spotlight after Troy Deeney was suspended. He’s responded with two goals in his last two league games against Southampton and Wolves. Surely he’d be out or Rangers’ reach? Possibly, but then we thought the same about Jermain Defoe and he ended up signing on an 18-month loan. The difference between the two players is that Gray is still playing for the first-team regularly, although his status in the pecking order could well change over the summer. If he is available for loan he would be a brilliant addition for Gerrard – Defoe and Gray would be a frontline that could dominate the Premiership. Gray is under contract until 2022 and a permanent move would be surely out of the question. But could Gerrard prove his pulling power again and land yet another Premier League star? Watch this space.
