Ally McCoist has said that Steven Gerrard’s first season in charge at Rangers has been a success but warned that he must bring in at least three new players this summer.

Talking on the Debate show (Sky Sports, Thursday, 10pm), McCoist said “inconsistencies” cost Rangers the title but that Gerrard had done what he’s been brought in for.

“I think he’s done well, I really do,” McCoist said.

“Massive summer coming up for Rangers and for Celtic. Inconsistencies cost them the league but they’re where I thought they’d be, in second place, and they have closed the gap to Celtic, but it’s a massive, massive summer coming up.

“They’ve got to strengthen again and they need a minimum of three players.”

OPINION

It might have been a disappointing season in terms of silverware, but the gap has been closed with Celtic and Rangers can go out on a high if they win the final Old Firm clash of the season on Sunday. Results against teams they should have beaten hurt them, but so did the suspensions to Alfredo Morelos in key games, most notably the cup semi-final. However, Gerrard has made the squad much better and Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis in particular have shone after joining the club in January. It was always going to be a big job for Gerrard at Rangers after the troubles of the season before and most fans will agree with McCoist’s judgment. He’s right that it’s also a massive summer for Celtic, and they have to decide who’s going to follow Brendan Rodgers and become the next permanent manager who can lead them to ten-in-a-row. Gerrard’s job is to ensure that doesn’t happen.
