Former Rangers boss Ally McCoist has said that the Ibrox club need “two or three players” if they are to push on next season.

Rangers defeated Glasgow neighbours Celtic 2-0 on Sunday in the fourth meeting between the sides this season, but Neil Lennon’s side have ultimately won the war, clinching an eighth successive Premiership title.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on Monday (talkSPORT, 8am), McCoist said that Rangers need to sign more first-team quality players if they are to compete again next season.

“I was on the phone to Walter [Smith] last night,” McCoist said. “My big concern is Rangers think they are a lot nearer to Celtic than they potentially are and maybe take the eye of the ball.

“It’s a big, big summer. Rangers need to go and get two or three players who will get into the starting line-up.”

OPINION

There is no doubt about it: Rangers need to strengthen this season if they are to push Celtic close again next season. Steven Gerrard has come in and done a magnificent job in his first season as manager at Ibrox, but he will also know that this is not the squad he needs just yet to really give Celtic a go in the race for the title. There are some great players in that squad – the likes of James Tavernier, who was brilliant in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Rangers – but Gerrard has to be backed again this summer if he is to improve this squad. Some of Gerrard’s signings have been solid ones. At the back, Nikola Katic looked good and although he was dropped for Joe Worrall for a decent portion of the season, he has been bang at it again in the past few weeks. There is no reason why Rangers cannot improve again with the right additions this summer.
