Following the comfortable 2-0 victory over Celtic at Ibrox yesterday afternoon, Steven Gerrard believes his side have proven that they can overcome the Hoops and that they should now have great confidence.

The Gers beat Celtic at Ibrox for a second time this term and despite losing out on the title, they cut the gap between themselves and their Old Firm rivals to six points.

Gerrard insists that his side should gain great belief from the victory and that they are able to topple their bitter rivals if they are able to perform at their best more consistently.

“At our best, we have shown we can compete and beat them but we have to do it over a longer period of time and that’s a bigger challenge,” As quoted in The Express.

“We have to do it in cup competitions when it comes to one-off game, so that’s the challenge moving forward.

“We should take a lot of belief and confidence from this performance and this result.”

OPINION

Rangers should now be filled with belief after two successful Old Firm triumphs at Ibrox this season. It is a serious sign of progression under Gerrard and the team that he has assembled is only going to improve under his tutelage. He must, however, make a handful of quality signings in the summer so that the squad has the depth to launch a serious challenge for the title – Celtic are in a transition period and without a permanent manager being appointed there are question marks. After a crazy period, Rangers now seem to be on the up again and the upcoming season could well be the year when Rangers really mount a challenge for the league title. Celtic have lost Rodgers and have not yet made a decision as to who will replace him permanently. The Hoops will be very wary of the increasing threat that Rangers pose and the defeat yesterday underlined their concerns.
