Rangers manager Steven Gerrard remains optimistic over the future but admits his side have had too many rough patches over the season.

The Light Blues finished the Scottish Premiership season with a 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock, leaving them on 78 points and in second place, nine points behind title winners Celtic.

Gerrard will continue his Rangers rebuild in the summer as the Gers look to bridge the gap between themselves and Celtic, believing there is belief in the squad but is aiming to achieve more consistency.

However, he warned that fans might not be too happy with what he has to say.

“Now, there is some belief and there is some positivity around. The fans have seen us play at a level they are proud of, but we have had too many bumps and too many setbacks, so the aim and challenge for us is can we find consistency for longer periods next season,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“If we do, I predict it could be an exciting future. The fans probably don’t want to hear that just right now, but I think when everything calms down and they analyse it, if you ask any Rangers fan if we are in a better place now than we were 12 months ago, I don’t think you would get many who disagree.”

OPINION

Rangers have improved under Gerrard and if they invest properly this summer, they will have a serious chance of winning the title next term. Gerrard will be going into the new season with experience behind him and having beaten Celtic on two occasions, they should have great belief in themselves. Consistency is key and Rangers must consistently perform rather than just showing glimpses – at times they did look capable of mounting a serious challenge. It’s essential that Gerrard keeps hold of Alfredo Morelos, his 30 goals have helped massively and losing him would have a devastating effect. Holding on to Morelos and adding a handful of quality players is exactly what needs to happen. It’s disappointing that the season has ended with defeat and it would have been good for the players to enter the new season high on confidence. Ultimately, Rangers now know they are well capable of beating Celtic.
