Gerrard remains coy over Morelos

Where to begin with Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombian has been at his typically polarising best this season, fluctuating wildly between the sublime and the ridiculous over the course of a campaign that will likely leave most fans asking what might have been.

29 goal is some return, but so is five red cards, and it feels as if Morelos has spent as much time in the stands as he has on the pitch this term.

That will frustrate fans and teammates alike, but it would appear that Steven Gerrard could be the man most irked by the 22-year-old’s rashness.

In recent weeks, Gerrard has elected to go with alternative options to the striker, largely out of necessity, and now it would seem as if the Ibrox boss’ patience is running out.

His latest comments on the forward would suggest that his future is very much up in the air.

As quoted in the Scottish Sun, he said: “Alfredo is one who doesn’t hide it well when he is suspended as he loves playing football.

“I’m sure he has learnt a lot in the last few weeks and hopefully we see that for the remainder of the season if and when he is given an opportunity.

“The message to the full team is we want them to be physical and aggressive in the right way.”

Reading between the lines, that sounds like a manager who has had enough of the blatant disciplinary issues his player keeps on suffering from – a player who has become a symbol of how not to play the game.

That can never be a good thing, but most telling is that little word “if”.

We are at a stage now where Morelos’ future is no longer a certainty, and as soon as that kind of rot creeps, things can become pretty dour for a player.
