Former Celtic star and current pundit Chris Sutton has voiced his surprise at his old side allowing Timothy Weah to leave the club early after his loan spell at Parkhead.

The loanee, signed in January from Paris St-Germain, was meant to stay at the club until the end of the season but revealed in a post on his personal Instagram account that manager Neil Lennon had told him to pack his things and leave ahead of joining the USA under-20 side for their World Cup campaign.

Sutton revealed he was gobsmacked by the decision and heralded the impact made by the young hitman, who has also operated in a wide position, before wishin him luck after showing plenty during his short spell in Glasgow.

He wrote on his Twitter account: “I’m surprised Timo Weah has gone now… he has shown he has plenty to offer and has made a significant impact …good luck to him.”

Opinion

Sutton will not be the only person, Celtic fan or not, who will be surprised to see Weah depart Parkhead early. Yes, he might be leaving for the under-20 World Cup – a fantastic opportunity for any young footballer – but that does not mean he cannot play his part in the final weeks of the club’s campaign. He has definitely showed glimpses of his talent during his short time in Glasgow and with a couple of league games before the Scottish Cup final, he could have taken the pressure off some of his teammates by playing more when there was nothing riding on the games. Lennon’s decision does not seem to have gone well with Sutton, while Weah has been very mature with his response to what must have been a bitter pill to swallow. Whether we see him in the Hoops in the future remains to be seen, but he will have certainly endeared himself to the Parkhead faithful with this heartfelt message.
