Ally McCoist believes that Rangers should consider offloading Alfredo Morelos in the summer transfer window – but only if the offer is good enough.

Aside from his ill-discipline Morelos, 22, has been in sensational form in Scotland, scoring 47 goals in 88 appearances across all competitions since Rangers signed him from HJK Helsinki for £1million in 2017.

French news outlet Foot Mercato has recently reported that Marseille are interested in buying the Colombia international in the summer, with the Gers wanting £15.5million in exchange for his signature.

And due to the recent form of Jermain Defoe while Morelos has been suspended, McCoist reckons that cashing in on Morelos would be something that’s on the cards for the summer.

“It would have to depend on the offer,” said McCoist when quizzed speculation about Morelos on BT Sport 1 on Friday night [Scottish Football Extra, 07:13pm].

“I’d have to say, Defoe’s come in and looked the part. I was always confident that if he had a run of games he would score goals, that’s certainly been the case.

“If the offer is good enough for Morelos you’d have to think about it, but then again you would have to replace him as well.”

OPINION

Morelos may be a key first team player at Ibrox but like McCoist says, every player has their price and Rangers should definitely offload the striker if they can pocket a decent fee. Morelos has hurt his transfer value since January due to his disciplinary issues, but that does not mean that clubs won’t want to sign him. Of course, Marseille are reportedly taking a look at Morelos, assuming that is because Moussa Dembele has made the switch from the Scottish Premiership to Ligue 1 look so simple having done well at Lyon since being signed from Celtic. Anything over £15million would be a decent fee for Rangers and one that fans should probably expect. Dembele went for nearly £20million last summer when he joined Lyon but his disciplinary record is squeaky clean compared to Morelos’. Defoe’s form is another reason why Rangers should get rid of the hot-headed Colombian but as McCoist says, a youthful replacement needs to be signed.
