Rae: Lennon is the frontrunner

Alex Rae has suggested that Neil Lennon is the frontrunner to land the Celtic job on a permanent basis.

The interim manager has overseen an eighth consecutive league title win, and is just one game away from being at the helm for a historic treble treble.

Based on those achievements, Rae believes that Lennon deserves the full-time role at Parkhead.

Speaking on talkSPORT (May 24th, 12.35pm), he said: “For me, absolutely, and I’ll tell you the reason why.

“Neil Lennon has stepped up to the plate, he then gets over the line with the league, and then goes on and wins the cups. For me, he is in pole position.

“Where is the loyalty if they don’t give him that job? He is very much the frontrunner.”

OPINION

You would fancy that Rae is right on this one. It would be pretty harsh on Lennon if he wasn’t given the permanent gig at Parkhead after his contribution during his time there this season. Admittedly, he took over a team of winners, but he also took the helm at a very difficult time, and he deserves an awful lot of credit for steadying the ship in the manner that he did. This is a man who knows that club inside out, who has the best interests of Celtic in his heart, and who will genuinely believe that given the right backing this summer, he can really keep this unbelievable run of success going. You would have to say that there is nothing to suggest that he couldn’t do just that. Things haven’t always been as fluid and exciting as they were under Brendan Rodgers, but give Lennon some time and he will prove he is the right man for the gig.
