When Craig Gordon suffered a major injury blow for Celtic at the start of 2018 very few would have predicted the impact it would have long term.

His knee injury right at the end of the January transfer window left the Hoops chasing a worthy replacement as they looked to seal a second successive treble in Scotland, with Scott Bain the man chosen to take his place on an initial loan deal.

Bain did well in the 6’4″ (source: Transfermarkt) colossus’ absence, enough to convince his loan side to turn his deal permanent last summer.

Fast forward to the present day and Gordon has once again found himself behind Bain in the pecking order, despite having started the campaign as the first choice shot stopper and playing 32 games this season.

Last summer’s arrival has taken his place between the sticks, the 27-year-old making 28 appearances and his displays have left manager Neil Lennon raving with manager quoted by the club’s official Twitter account as saying: “Scott Bain has been outstanding in all aspects of his game.”

To impress in certain areas would be expected but to be heralded for you all round game – that means you are doing something exceptionally right and with Gordon sitting on the sidelines, the Scottish veteran is surely sweating over his future at Parkhead.

He will be desperate to make sure he is playing regular football next season but if Bain has impressed this much then how can Lennon consider dropping the axe?
