Celtic reserves captain, Regan Hendry, is due to be out of contract this summer and it is understood that he will not be offered a new deal, according to the Scottish Sun.

Hendry has failed to make an impact since he was brought to the club in 2015 and has spent this season in League One with Raith Rovers.

The 21-year-old midfielder has never made a senior appearance for the Bhoys. With the amount of midfield ammunition currently bolstering the ranks, the chances of him making a breakthrough are slim, to say the least.

Hendry, a former Scotland under 19 international, was wanted by Norwich City last year but their interest was not materialised.

OPINION

Celtic’s midfield arsenal is the best the league has to offer. The likes of McGregor, Brown and Ntcham mean that competition is immensely stiff. It would be difficult for any player coming through to make an influential difference to warrant regular game-time. Hendry clearly has ability, he wouldn’t have been made Celtic reserves captain if not – he’s only 21 and there is still time for him to carve out a successful career. The move makes little difference to Celtic, they have options in abundance and judging by previous years, they will not be short of talent coming through when the time is right. Hendry, having made 13 appearances for Raith Rovers this season, may feel as if he must re-build and start with a club who can continue to guarantee him the game-time and experience that he needs. Celtic have a rebuilding job to do too but it looks like Lennon, or whoever the next permanent manager is going to be, will do this without Hendry.
