Boyd: I fear for Lennon

Kris Boyd has admitted that he fears for Neil Lennon’s chances of landing the Celtic job on a full-time basis.

The Northern Irishman has been at the helm at Parkhead since Brendan Rodgers left the club for Leicester City earlier this year, but former Rangers striker Boyd believes that the longer the Hoops wait to announce their plans for next season, the worse it will be for Lennon’s chances.

Writing in a column for the Scottish Sun, he said: “I fear for him, I really do.

“I think if the Celtic board were going to give him the job long-term, they would have done so by now.

“The longer it goes on, the less chance he has of landing the job.”

OPINION

This is probably nonsense from Boyd. No offence to the striker, who is a very astute pundit with a great knowledge of the Scottish game, but there’s nothing to say that the Hoops aren’t just biding their time before making any kind of announcement. You only have to look as far as Manchester United’s appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to realise that rushing into a decision over an interim boss can lead to hiccups. It makes much more sense to wait out the season, see how Celtic get on in their quest for the treble, and then decide. Ultimately, the timing has nothing to do with conclusion that the board will come to, and if anything, waiting longer could give Lennon a greater chance of landing the role, if he can finish what he has started and secure the Scottish Cup when the Bhoys play Hearts at the end of the month.
