Many Wolves fans should be worried as Kevin Phillips appears to be spot-on with his theory about why their club has had a successful first season in the Premier League.

The former Sunderland forward shared that Wolves had caught many by surprise as Premier Leagues teams didn’t know what to expect when playing them.

He also pointed out that due to there not being many expectations of Wolves as a new side in the top-flight, it allowed them to play without fear.

“Like Wolves this season, it’s that unknown that uncertainty that Premier League teams don’t know, so they go in with no fear and show you what they can do,” said Phillips on Sky Sports’ The Debate (22:16, Friday May 10th).

While Wolves deserves credit for taking advantage of being an unknown quantity for Premier League sides to face, as it’s not like Fulham or Cardiff City made the most of this advantage,  it should still have their supporters worried about next season.

Every other side will know how Nuno Espirito Santo will set his team up to play next season and they won’t be caught off guard as a result.

This means Wolves have to up their game in order to continue racking up the wins next season as second-season syndrome isn’t a myth.

For proof of this, you just have to look at Ipswich Town.

In the 2000/2001 season, the Tractor Boys finished fifth in the Premier League only to finish 18th in their following campaign and be relegated.

Wolves have a squad capable of being more than one-season wonders after finishing seventh this season, but it’s clear they still need to up their game as Phillips is right to indirectly suggest they will lose a trick in their arsenal.
