Jamie Redknapp has torn into Tottenham defender Juan Foyth after his “horrendous” tackle on Bournemouth’s Jack Simpson on Saturday.

Foyth had only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes before he was shown a straight red card by referee Craig Pawson and Spurs were reduced to nine men due to Heung-min Son being sent off in the first-half.

Spurs lost 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium thanks to a last-gasp goal by Nathan Ake, but most of the talk after the game was centred on Foyth’s horrific challenge on Simpson.

Redknapp has blasted the Argentine for his out of control tackle and believes it was the correct decision for him to be sent off.

“He’s looking down, he’s not really looking at his leg,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports Premier League after the game on Saturday [02:44pm].

“It looks horrendous, don’t get me wrong, but it’s one of those where if the ball’s running away there’s a bit of desperation. He tried to slide in there in the last second and his foot’s just really high.

“It looks really bad. He’s just out of control and his leg just comes up.

“It’s definitely a red card, you can’t deny that, but it’s one of those when it’s not nice to see.”

OPINION

Foyth deserved to be sent off. He may not have meant to hurt Simpson, but it was a wild and out of control lunge that could have seriously injured the Bournemouth player. It was not a controversial decision at all and Pawson got that one spot on. Pawson was totally wrong for the other decision though. Son should not have been sent off for pushing Jefferson Lerma to the ground. Pushing and shoving happens all the time and yet again, a referee has been tricked by a player who has gone down to the ground with the slightest of contact. Earlier this week the FA deemed that Aston Villa’s Conor Hourihane did nothing wrong even though he appeared to punch Leeds midfielder Mateusz Klich in the stomach. Klich didn’t go down and even on a review, the FA did nothing. How can the FA find what Hourihane did acceptable if they are going to uphold Son’s suspension? What constitutes violent conduct and what doesn’t is becoming a joke.
