Wolves are leading the race to sign Nice goalkeeper Walter Benitez, according to Goal

The Argentinian is attracting interest from three Premier League clubs; Wolves, Newcastle and Crystal Palace are all keeping tabs on the 6ft 3in colossus.

Benitez has one year remaining on his Nice deal and the goalkeeper wants to enhance his chances of playing for his national team. It is understood that former Argentina Under 20 international is seeking European football – if Manchester City beat Watford in the Fa Cup final Wolves will meet this request.

Having played 33 times in Ligue 1 this term, Benitez has only conceded 26 and has an impressive 15 clean sheets to his name.

Good move for Wolves?

Benitez looks a solid goalkeeper who dons an extremely impressive record this season. The goalkeeper wants to enhance his chance of playing for Argentina and will need game-time in order to do so – something Wolves can’t offer. Rui Patricio has been outstanding this season for Wolves and it’s difficult to imagine anybody replacing him in between the sticks. Benitez would be exceptional cover however he may demand bigger wages and of course game-time, despite this being a good move it’s one that doesn’t make logical sense.

Is it likely?

As highlighted, the player is demanding recognition on a bigger stage and with Patricio comfortably being the club’s number one, Benitez may not fancy a move to the West Midlands. Other Premier League clubs are interested and Benitez may feel that he is better suited to a club that will guarantee him the minutes he needs in order to play international football. With that being said, Wolves are his best bet at playing European football.
