Rangers are interested in Derby County defender Max Lowe, according to the Daily Record, and are planning a ‘shock’ hijack of the Aberdeen loanee.

Lowe is still on loan at Aberdeen and boss Derek McIness wants to bring the 22-year-old back to Pittodrie next season.

However, Aberdeen will now face competition from the Gers though with Steven Gerrard contacting former England teammate Frank Lampard to try and hijack the move.

Derby boss Frank Lampard rates the young defender and won’t sanction a permanent move.

However, he does think the player will benefit from another loan move.

Good move for Rangers?

Rangers have struggled at times with the left-back position this season. Borna Barisic has suffered from injuries, Jon Flanagan hasn’t been at his best on the left, and Andy Halliday has been used there. Lowe may be a more suitable left-back choice and he’s proved himself at rivals Aberdeen in the SPL this season so he wouldn’t be much of a risk. But, having made an impact at Aberdeen, McIness will be eager to bring him back to Pittodrie and may be able to persuade Lampard that he’d be better off without any disruption. Steven Gerrard does have left-back options but Lowe could be just what they are in need of in terms of consistency and competition.

Likely to happen?

Rangers are expected to make several additions over the coming months and Gerrard could lean on his former England teammate to convince him that Rangers would be a step up from Aberdeen. It would make a lot of sense too – Rangers are a step up from Aberdeen in terms of quality and will be looking to push on and challenge for the title next season. Lowe will most likely be granted a loan move next term and it’s really down to who wants the player more out of Rangers and Aberdeen. We could definitely see Gerrard pulling rank with his Lampard connections.
