Rangers will miss out on the signing of Bolton defender Mark Beevers, according to Football Insider.

The source says that the 29-year-old – who is out of contract next month and will leave due to the club’s current financial crisis – has rejected a move north of the border to sign for Peterborough.

Football Insider add that Peterborough could make an announcement about Beevers’ acquisition as early as this week.

OPINION

This is bad news for Rangers with two defenders already set to leave Ibrox this summer. Joe Worrall, who was signed from Nottingham Forest on a six-month loan deal in January, was excellent in his time with the club and kept Nikola Katic out of the team for a good while. Gareth McAuley, meanwhile, is out of contract soon and will not be offered an extension. All this means that Gers boss Steven Gerrard is left with just two centre-backs at the club: Katic and Connor Goldson. Gerrard badly needs to bring in defensive additions and that area should be top of his list. It looks from this report like it was, but the news that they are reportedly set to miss out on Beevers will be a  kick in the teeth. Rangers are allegedly tracking Oldham’s George Edmundson, but are believed to have had a bid rejected. Where this leaves Rangers remains to be seen, but they need some more defenders and pronto.
