Rangers have had a bid for Oldham defender George Edmundson rejected, according to the Daily Mail.

The report says that Rangers bid what they saw as a “fair price” for the 21-year-old.

However, the Mail also claims that the League Two side are thought to want more than the £450,000 that clubs thought would be enough to secure his signature.

Three English clubs have also had bids rejected with Oldham hoping to start a bidding war for the 6ft3in centre-back.

It had previously been reported by Football Insider that Steven Gerrard had held face-to-face talks with Edmundson and that he was confident his sales pitch would put Rangers in pole position.

OPINION

Rangers didn’t want to get into a bidding war for a player like Edmundson but it looks like that’s exactly what Oldham are hoping for. They need the money and it’s highly likely that Edmundson will be on the move this summer, but for what price? He’s out of contract at the end of next season so Oldham will need to cash in this window and according to the Mail report, the defender has turned down a new contract to stay at the League Two club. Steven Gerrard wants him as part of his rebuild but there will be a ceiling for a player who will be taking a big step up from League Two. Oldham want more than £450,000 for a player who came up through the youth ranks at the club and as the window has only just opened they’re in no hurry to cut a deal cheaply. This is one that will likely run through the summer.
