Rangers are ready to table a new bid to sign Oldham centre-back George Edmundson after their first offer was rejected by the English League Two club, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that the Light Blues had an opening bid worth £400,000 kicked into touch by the Latics, even though they are resigned to losing the 21-year-old this summer.

It is understood that Wigan, Stoke and Derby are also interested in Edmundson while Rangers, Hull and Peterborough have had bids rejected.

The Scottish Sun adds that Rangers are now planning to make a renewed bid for the 6ft 3 (transfermarkt) colossus in the coming days.

Good move for Rangers?

Edmundson is highly-rated at Oldham and the amount of clubs in the English Championship that are interested in signing him should be an indication as to how right Rangers are to be hot on the heels of the defender.

He made 54 appearances in all competitions for the Latics this season, scoring two goals and supplying five assists in the process.

The ex-Fylde loanee has impressed with his defensive performances but stepping up from a mid-table club in England’s fourth-tier to a team that wants to win the Scottish Premiership is quite a jump.

Edmundson won’t be first choice at Ibrox but he has potential, so it might be worth bidding a bit more to pry him away from Boundary Park.

Likely to happen?

A lot of clubs are interested in Edmundson and interested clubs like Derby and Stoke are bound to be attractive places to go, especially as one could be a Premier League team next season.

However Rangers seem very keen and the chance to work with Gerrard, play in Europe and challenge for silverware is something that the centre-back might opt for if he has a choice to make.
