John Motson expects Tottenham to sign at least two players in the summer transfer window if not three.

The legendary commentator shared that he thought Spurs definitely had to improve and increase their squad as their bench looked not as strong as their Premier League rivals near the end of the season.

Motson went as far as to say that he’d be surprised if that by the time August hit that two new arrivals hadn’t rocked up at Tottenham.

“Well they’ve certainly got to improve and increase the squad because the bench at the times towards the end of the season didn’t look as strong as the other competitors at their level,” said Motson on talkSPORT (14:55, Monday May 20th).

“Yeah I think what is it two transfer windows without a signing and Lucas Moura was the last player they bought?

“I think they have to, I mean they will, I’d be very surprised if we weren’t sitting here in August with Tottenham having at least two if not three new players.”

OPINION

Tottenham do need players and hopefully Motson is right to be confident. Spurs’ starting-eleven is ridiculously strong when in form, hence why the club find themselves in the Champions League final, but the squad’s depth isn’t reassuring. Mauricio Pochettino has a number of back-up options for the majority of positions, the only issue is his back-up options are generally way off the quality his first-choice options possess. However with two or three high-calibre signings, Spurs would look very strong across the board. Tottenham will be aiming to compete in several competitions, just like they did this season, and need a squad that has strength in depth to do so. Spurs started to look a little bit leggy in the final league games of the season as the fixture list had caught up with them, and that can’t be allowed to happen again. The only question mark over Spurs’ business in the coming window is how much Daniel Levy will sanction spending. Spurs made no signings in the last two transfer windows, so it’s hard to know if they’d be willing to splash enough cash to get the right players.
