Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to sign Leicester City playmaker James Maddison using the potential windfall from winning the Champions League, according to the Daily Mirror.

The national newspaper claim that the Spurs boss is planning how to spend the club’s Champions League jackpot after reaching the tournament’s final as it could match the £72million Liverpool got for reaching the final last season.

The Mirror report that Pochettino will be given a chunk of that cash to strengthen his squad and as a result is eyeing a move for the Foxes’ attacking midfielder as he feels the player will only get better.

It is believed that Spurs are one of a number of clubs keen on Maddison and that if Leicester City were even going to consider selling the 22-year-old then it would cost a side substantially more than £22.5million.

Good move for Tottenham?

Sort of.

Maddison, who currently earns £55,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac),would no doubt do well at Spurs and would likely get better under Pochettino.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder scored seven goals and registered seven assists in his 38 outings for the Foxes in his 2018/19 campaign, and was involved in 27% of their league goals (Source: Transfermarkt).

So there’s no denying that Maddison could be a creative force in Spurs’ team especially when you consider he’d arguably be surrounded by better players.

However it sounds like he could end up costing a ridiculous amount.

The 22-year-old is talented but if Leicester City want substantially more than£22.5million then Spurs could possibly end up paying over the odds, and with several players needing to be signed, it might not be worth it.

Likely to happen?

Spurs could end up with a huge windfall from winning the Champions League, though it’s worth noting they’ll get a lot of money for just being runners-up, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to start acting silly in the transfer market.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has always been careful when splashing the funds on players and given that the Foxes could demand above the odds for Maddison, it’s hard to see a deal happening.
