Alan Brazil has slated Tottenham after Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost 1-0 in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax.

The talkSPORT host believed Spurs got their tactics completely wrong in north London and were dominated by the Dutch side, especially in the first half.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show (Wednesday, May, 6:30am) he said: “Poch you got it wrong! It should have been one up front – Dele off of Moura and flood your midfield.

“Ajax totally controlled it first half. At half-time, I swear I thought if he doesn’t change this, if he doesn’t sort it, it’s going to be two or three.”

OPINION

There is no doubt that Tottenham got it wrong against Ajax and were a step behind everything the Dutch side did, especially in that first half. Having said this, tactics do not matter when the players involved are not hitting their full potential. Spurs looked lacklustre and after what was surely a stern talking to at half-time, they improved. In a Champions League semi-final, it should not take a full half to get going because the best teams will tear you apart and that’s what a youthful Ajax side did to Tottenham, who were fortunate to only be 1-0 down at the break. Pochettino definitely got it wrong and that was highlighted when he himself altered his system to a back four but it was too little too late. The damage was already done conceding the away goal and it was not good enough from Spurs on the biggest occasion. Now they have it all to do in the second leg in Amsterdam and they will need to take a long hard look at themselves knowing they will need to score at least once.
