David Bentley has suggested that Tottenham talisman Harry Kane should and will play in the Champions League final next Saturday.

The striker has been out of action since damaging an ankle ligament in the quarter final first leg against Manchester City back in April, but former Spurs man Bentley insists that Mauricio Pochettino must put his faith in him for the big one in Madrid.

Speaking on Radio 5 Live, he said: “I think he’ll play. I think he should play, he will play.

“I think he’s fit to go into a one-off game like that.

“Someone like him, he can be the difference between them winning, and as a manager, you could not live with yourself if you didn’t play him.”

OPINION

You can see where Bentley is coming from on this one, but you can’t help feeling that it is still a gamble to put Kane straight back into lineup in Madrid. He talks about being fit for a one-off game, but does it really work like that? 90 minutes is 90 minutes, no matter what the prize at the end of it. Adrenaline will get you so far, of course, but what happens if that begins to wane, or if it becomes clear 10 minutes in that something isn’t right? Surely it would be better to start Kane on the bench. Let Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min off the leash, and bring him on in the latter stages to make an impact on a tiring Liverpool team. Kane can still play a huge part in this final, make no mistake, but it is too risky for Spurs to put all of their hopes on his shoulders.
