Newcastle United defender Jamie Sterry has been involved in the first team training sessions ahead of the club’s clash against Liverpool.

The 23-year-old, who has only played three times for the first team this season, none of which have come in the Premier League, has spent much of his time playing for the under-23 side, while he also spent a short time on loan at Crewe Alexandra before his temporary spell was cut short.

As pictured on the Magpies’ official website (pictures 17 & 30) the rarely seen full back was among the senior stars readying themselves for Saturday’s home clash against Liverpool, having not been pictured among first team training recently.

Opinion

Is Rafael Benitez simply giving Sterry a taste of senior training or does it signal that Newcastle might have to call upon him as part of the squad against Liverpool? As a right back, Sterry’s involvement would mean that Javier Manquillo, also spotted in training, or DeAndre Yedlin, who has been on the bench recently and was nowhere to be seen among the photos, would likely miss out, so perhaps there are some doubts over the American international. With just three cup appearances this season, Sterry’s future at Newcastle is not looking all that bright and you would expect him to depart St James’ Park this summer. Still, he is being given the chance to prove himself among the first team stars on Tyneside and perhaps he will be given a run out in the final games of the season to build up experience and put himself in the shop window.
