Newcastle defender Fabian Schar has praised the club’s “perfect” 4-0 win over Fulham earlier this month.

The 27-year-old was one of four scorers on the day as the Magpies ended the season on a high note, ensuring a 13th-placed finish with a rout of the relegated Cottagers at Craven Cottage.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle about his debut season with the club, Schar – who made 28 appearances in all competitions last term – reflected on the win in West London as a key one to end the season with.

“I had a quite hard start, like the whole team,” the Switzerland international said. “I think the whole team struggled a lot the first 10 games, but then we started getting points and doing a good job over the whole season.

“I think, for me and the team, the second part was quite good and we can be proud of the end. For me, it was also a quite good season when I look now.”

“[The Fulham win] was the perfect end, I think, for us. To get one position above at the end, and to give the fans something, was the perfect game for us.

“It was a quite good day for us.”

OPINION

Overall, it has was a thoroughly enjoyable season for Newcastle. As Schar says, it was a difficult start to the campaign for Newcastle. The Magpies did not win any of their first 10 Premier League games, losing seven and drawing three, meaning they were languishing towards the bottom of the table a decent way into the season. But three successive wins in November put them back on track and from there they were good enough to eventually finish quite high up. The key result for Newcastle has to be the Manchester City one, where they beat the reigning champions 2-1, coming back from a first-minute Sergio Aguero goal which threatened a cricket score. For Schar, he has been a solid addition at the back and, as he says, he can begin to look forward to the summer ahead with pre-season after settling well in his first season, before knuckling down to go again in August.
