Newcastle United striker Joselu has confirmed that he has the opportunity to leave St James’ Park this summer as he weighs up his future.

The 6’3″ giant (source: Transfermarkt) fell down the pecking order behind Salomon Rondon after the Venezuelan’s arrival on Tyneside and spent much of the season watching on from the sidelines, making 20 appearances across all competitions.

Speaking of what the summer might hold in store, with just a year left on his contract, Joselu revealed he has an offer on the table to switch clubs, but that he will wait and see whether a takeover happens at Newcastle first.

He told Marca: “I have one year left on the contract at Newcastle, I have chances to change but it will depend on the new board that will come to the club.”

Opinion

You have to question why Joselu is waiting around for a takeover. He has already found playing time hard to come by under Rafael Benitez this season just gone so does he think a new owner is going to give him an increased contract and more action? Not in the slightest. He always looked likely to be one of the first names to leave St James’ Park this year, having failed to make much of an impact despite his impressive work ethic up front, and Benitez would like to get him off the wage bill to help bring in new recruits. If Joselu has an offer ready and waiting then he should snap it up – things are not going to get any better for him at Newcastle United. Still, the club will have to agree terms with any interested parties, so maybe it is not as clear cut as the Spanish hitman suggests. Only time will tell as to whether he stays on board for next season – but if he does, something has gone wrong at the Magpies.
