There have been no enquiries made for the signature of Newcastle starlet Sean Longstaff ahead of the summer transfer window, according to journalist Craig Hope.

The Daily Mail journalist, on his personal Twitter account, looked to end all rumours of a potential move away from the club amid reported interest in the youngster by saying: “There has not even been an enquiry from Man Utd for Sean Longstaff & certainly no bids. NUFC have no reason to believe one is due either.”

News surrounding Sean Longstaff and his Newcastle future broke in May, with the Irish Times claiming that Manchester United were ready to launch a bid for the starlet.

After making his Premier League debut in December off the bench against Liverpool, the 21-year-old quickly became a mainstay in Rafael Benitez’s side before a knee injury ended his season early in March.

With the news that the Magpies are not expecting any bids, Longstaff will look to cement his place in the side over pre-season and go into his first full season in the Premier League.

OPINION

This is great news for all involved in Newcastle. Alongside a potential takeover of the club and the possible contract renewal of Rafael Benitez, Newcastle have every chance of pushing forward to the top half of the Premier League table next season. Keeping their most talented youngsters is vital for any success, Longstaff quickly cemented his place in the side and became a fan favourite during his spell in the team’s midfield. At 21-years-old, the move to Manchester United could have arrived too early, with the possibility of first team chances much higher under Benitez who seemed to favour the youngster after his debut. The arrival of an experienced central midfielder could really boost Longstaff’s confidence in the middle of the park as-well. Partnered with an older head, he could really excel under the guidance and it could give him much more confidence on and off the ball in the next campaign. This news is the first positive result in a week that could bring many and the fact they will be able to keep hold of one of their prized assets can only be good news for the club.
