Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden has insisted that Newcastle must spend money this summer, or risk being “left behind”.

The Magpies are said to be in positive talks with the Bin Zayed group over a proposed £350million deal that will see them take over ownership of the club from Mike Ashley.

Looan star Salomon Rondon is one player Newcastle are reportedly keen to keep at St James’ Park, but, speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, Hayden added that only the right investments must be made.

“It is pretty obvious that if you stand still you will be left behind,” the 24-year-old said. “[Spending money] does not guarantee anything, look at Fulham.

“They spent £100million and got relegated. It doesn’t guarantee it but it’s about finding the happy medium.”

OPINION

If this proposed takeover of Newcastle does indeed get over the line, it would be a fantastic move for the club. It would free them of so many constraints they are currently under with Ashley, and they would finally be allowed to yield serious spending power. But Hayden is right. Even if the Magpies do get the money they so badly crave, they must use it in the right way. Fulham are the perfect example of how not to go about spending money. To come back into the Premier League and spend £100million is a bold statement, but it is quite embarrassing to then be relegated after it. If Newcastle are to get serious spending power, they need to make sure they invest it properly to avoid similar disappointment. Let’s be honest, the reality is that they will not suffer the same drastic fate as Fulham, but nevertheless the threat remains. Tying Rondon down to a new deal would be the perfect start.
