Newcastle could be a destination for Lukaku

Danny Mills mooted the possibility of Newcastle United signing Manchester United attacker Romelu Lukaku.

The pundit shared that he thought the Magpies could be a possible destination for the 26-year-old forward if he departed Old Trafford anytime soon.

However Mills acknowledged that Newcastle’s chances of signing Lukaku would all come down to whether Rafa Benitez could convince him to join and whether the club would be willing to cope with his wage demand.

“Well that’s the thing (could Rafa convince him) then you got his wages, is a team going to be willing to pay him an awful lot of money on what can be considered a big gamble,” said Mills on talkSPORT (16:21, Thursday May 23rd).

“Maybe Newcastle, maybe that could be a direction that he could possibly go in.”

OPINION

Lukaku to Newcastle surely has no chance of happening? The 26-year-old attacker currently earns £180,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac) at Man United and it’s hard to see the Magpies wanting to pay him anywhere near that amount to play for them. Lukaku had a disappointing 2018/19 campaign at Old Trafford, like the majority of his Man United teammates, and only managed to score 15 goals in 45 outings. While scoring 15 goals isn’t too shabby, it’s not enough for a club like Manchester United. For that reason, it would be no surprise if the Belgian international was pushed out the doors of Old Trafford in the summer; however eyebrows would be raised if he pulled on the black and whites stripes of Newcastle. While the Magpies are a big enough club in terms of attracting the forward, it’s hard to imagine the club’s owner, Mike Ashley, wanting to pay anyone north of £100,000-a-week.
