Danny Mills has heaped praise on Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, and has suggested he doesn’t want him to leave the club this summer.

Phillips has been a standout performer for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season, and former full-back Mills has been quick to reiterate his importance.

Speaking on talkSPORT (May 23rd, 4pm), he said: “He’s been integral to what Leeds have done this season.

“I don’t want him to leave, that’s for sure, and Leeds fans won’t want him to either.

“In that midfield role, he’s played that very, very well. He’s got a lot of ability on the ball. He’s good in defensive areas, his positioning is very, very good, he works hard.

“I think for certain, he could definitely step up [to the Premier League].”

OPINION

Mills is certainly speaking for all Leeds fans on this one. Phillips has been magnificent this season, and the prospect of losing him will fill most fans with dread. The midfielder is certainly good enough to make the step up to the Premier League, and now that Leeds are set for another year in the Championship, it would be no great surprise if there were a whole host of clubs who came in for him during the transfer window. The 23-year-old has all the qualities needed to be a big hit in the top flight, and he has plenty of time left to grow and develop as well. Leeds will fight tooth and nail to keep him at Elland Road, but even if they do, if they don’t go up next season, he would surely be looking for a way out of the club. Phillips is Leeds born and bred, but somewhere along the line, you have to put your head before your heart.
