Danny Mills shared that he thought Steven Gerrard’s reign at Rangers had gone very well so far and that the manager was helping the Gers attract some real quality players.

The former Premier League player shared he thought Gerrard had done a very good job after talking about Gers defender James Tavernier.

Mills was asked by Sam Matterface what he thought about Tavernier ending his 2018/19 season with 17 goals and 20 assists across all competitions, and the pundit replied by claiming the 27-year-old could attract PL clubs this summer.

“Well I think y’know again, a player who could be on a Premier League list of lot of clubs,” said Mills on talkSPORT (18:39, Thursday May 23rd).

“And you have to say…Steven Gerrard has done a very very good job there and because of him has been able to attract some real quality players.”

OPINION

Gerrard deserves praise for how his Rangers reign is going so far but Mills’ timing of his praise was a bit odd. While Gerrard has attracted some real quality players to Ibrox, Tavernier isn’t one of them. The 27-year-old has been at Rangers since joining from Wigan in 2015 and Mills jumping to praise Gerrard when talking about the right-back, made it sound like the former Liverpool player had played a part in the defender’s success. While Tavernier has done well under Gerrard, he was excelling ahead of the manager’s arrival. In fact while his numbers were lower in his 2017/18 campaign, he did impress last season as well when he got nine goals and nine assists in 46 outings across all competitions. For that reason it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Premier League sides chase Tavernier in the summer as a defender capable of being so useful in front of goal is a rare thing indeed. Tavernier is especially a rare breed when you consider that he is quite solid when doing his defensive duties as well.
