Adrian Durham slammed the narrative that some people had put on the Premier League title race between Manchester City and Liverpool.

The talkSPORT broadcaster shared that while he appreciated that Man City had spent a lot of money on their players, it didn’t mean they hadn’t worked hard or been successful due to good coaching.

Durham claimed it was disrespectful to suggest that City were only about spending money and that it shouldn’t lead to people feeling sorry for Liverpool by wanting the Reds to win the title instead.

“I appreciate Man City have spent a lot of money on their players but if you’re thinking no work has gone into it, there’s no coaching, it’s just load of expensive players thrown onto the pitch, I’m not buying into that narrative,” said Durham on talkSPORT (18:10, Tuesday May 7th).

“I think it’s disrespectful to come on air with that narrative that not a lot is going on at City other than spending money, so that’s why we should feel sorry for little old Liverpool and that’s why Liverpool should win the league.

“Do me a favour, show a bit more respect to the quality of football Manchester City player.”

OPINION

Durham seemed on the brink of going on a rant after the mere thought that Man City were successful due to their spending in the transfer market. It’s easy to see why Durham had a bee in his bonnet over this issue as it’s wrong to dismiss the job Pep Guardiola has done at Man City. While some may believe you can buy the Premier League title by splashing the cash on world-class players it’s not that easy. History has shown that a team of individuals more often than not ending up falling short because at the end of the day, football is a team game. Also it’s bizarre that some would root for Liverpool because of the amount of money Man City have spent. It’s not like the Reds are scrimping and saving when it comes to building their team as they did splash the cash on signing Virgil van Dijk and Alisson. So they’re hardly the underdog story of the year by any account.
