The Premier League has refused to give anything away on the latest speculation surrounding the ownership of Newcastle United.

According to the Sun, Mike Ashley has agreed a £350million deal to sell the Tyneside club to Dubai-based billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan and contracts have been submitted to the Premier League.

However the league has only issued as two-word “no comment” response when pressed to give an update on the speculation surround Newcastle.

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards shared the Premier League’s response via his personal Twitter account on Monday morning.

OPINION

It is not a shock to see that the Premier League are refusing to talk about this subject, especially as it is such a high-profile claim by the Sun that has stunned Newcastle supporters in the last 12 hours. They have wanted Ashley out for so long and now these claims are suggesting that the Sport Direct tycoon might finally be on his way out of St James’ Park. However the league is never going to comment before the club or the buyer that are concerned in the story. While it is hard to do, Newcastle fans should avoid getting too excited at this stage because everyone knows what Ashley is like when it comes to negotiating with potential buyers. We’ve seen with Amanda Staveley and Peter Kenyon in the last couple of seasons who have been reported to be close to a deal, only for nothing to happen. Unfortunately the same thing is more than likely going to happen again.
