Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, heaped praise on former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers in The Scottish Sun following Celtic’s 50th league title victory.

Lawwell pointed out what a good job Lennon had done since he took over and steered the Bhoys to their eighth successive league triumph, but also went out of his way to praise Rodgers.

“Brendan, too, played a huge part in our success and we thank him for this great contribution,” Lawell said.

“Most importantly, I would also like to thank our supporters who have once again given us such fantastic backing throughout the season.”

OPINION

Celtic continue to dominate Scottish football, and a big reason why is because of the foundations that Brendan Rodgers laid down. Rodgers won the title every season that he spent with the club and his efforts and success have not gone unnoticed. Celtic fans should appreciate what Rodgers did for the club but there was a lot of bitterness over the manner of his departure to Leicester and it’s unlikely they’ll ever be able to forgive him for leaving them in the lurch. That’s a shame but completely understandable – it’s a big shame that the Rodgers legacy was tainted in this way, but he has already made a success of things in the Premier League and probably has no regrets. Lawwell’s comments are professional and a nice touch, although fans might not see if that way. Lawwell now has a decision to make as to whether Lennon lands the job, but the success that Rodgers enjoyed as Celtic boss means that the foundations are well and truly in place.
