Nottingham Forest are in the hunt to sign Lawrence Shankland, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that Swansea, Sunderland and Hull are also interested in the 23-year-old centre-forward, who announced via his personal Twitter account on Friday that he is leaving Scottish Championship side Ayr United.

Shankland’s deal at Somerset Park is set to expire in the summer and the ex-Aberdeen striker has already confirmed that he will be leaving them and become available on a free transfer.

Good move for Nottingham Forest?

Shankland has been in red-hot form in front of goal this season for Ayr United, but there have to be doubts about whether or not he can continue his goalscoring streak in the English Championship.

Yes, he scored 34 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions this season for Ayr, but they were against the likes of Morton, Alloa and Ross County.

He is definitely too good for the Scottish Championship but could he find the net against teams like Leeds United, West Brom, Middlesbrough and Fulham, who will all be in England’s second-tier next season? It’s doubtful.

However Shankland will be available on a free transfer with his contract expiring so it might just be worth Martin O’Neill making a move to sign the striker just to add an extra option to his attack.

Maybe he will prove us wrong.

Likely to happen?

Shankland appears to be attracting a lot of attention from across the UK and that is no surprise after the ridiculously good season he enjoyed in front of goal in the Scottish Championship.

Forest do stand a good chance of signing him if they table an offer but Shankland might want a starting role, which is something that probably won’t be guaranteed at the City Ground next season.
