BBC pundit Noel Whelan has launched an astonishing attack on Pontus Jansson, claiming that it would be “fantastic” if the defender was the first player to leave Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

Jansson, 28, has been in great form for Leeds since he was signed from Torino in 2017, appearing in 120 matches across all competitions for the Yorkshire giants.

However ex-Leeds striker Whelan has accused the Sweden international of being a poor team player and does not reckon he is good enough to play in the top-flight of English football.

“It’s all about him. He is not a team player, he’s an individual. It is as simple as that,” Whelan told BBC’s West Yorkshire Sport Daily [26m50s] on Friday.

“If he is the first to go, fantastic, because there are better defenders. I will tell you what, he is not Premier League class.”

OPINION

Jansson has had a decent season for Leeds, like most of the players that have been key to Marcelo Bielsa’s plans in the Championship. It is very harsh to say that he’s all about himself and it would not be great if he was sold in the summer transfer window. Yes, Jansson might be able to fetch a decent fee in the transfer window but Leeds’ defence has looked good with Jansson and Liam Cooper have played alongside each other. If fans just forget about the last month or two and cast their minds back to earlier in the season, would they be wanting to get rid of Jansson or any first team mainstays in the summer? Probably not. They just need a summer off to recharge their batteries and they need Bielsa to sign some extra players, especially in the defence. Leeds will not get promoted by having just two senior centre-backs.
