Newcastle are in pursuit of Young Boys defender Loris Benito ahead of a potential summer move according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that Benito’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and will therefore be available to move on a free come the transfer window.

The Swiss full back, an int’l teammate of current Magpie and firm fan favourite Fabian Schar, has enjoyed a great season for Young Boys featuring throughout their Champions League group in games against Juventus and Manchester United. Benito, 27, also earned his first international cap this season in November.

The Sun also reports that Newcastle will face competition from fellow Premier League rivals Watford and Burnley.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle definitely need reinforcements in time for next season. They are currently having to place square pegs in round holes by playing Matt Ritchie, a winger, at full back in a back five.

With Paul Dummett, their usual left back being drafted into a makeshift central defender, this move definitely makes sense.

Benito has gained plaudits in his role in Young Boy’s charge towards another title which they have run away with. Benito has scored once and registered five assists which proves he would suit Newcastle’s system in which Benitez expects his full back’s to get forward to create chances.

The only negative would be Benito’s ability to adapt to a much bigger league with a better brand of football but he would certainly be given a chance to tackle it with both hands under Benitez.

Likely to happen?

The proposed summer move definitely fits into Newcastle and Mike Ashley’s transfer policy; the cheaper the better.

Newcastle haven’t spent big money in the recent years apart from on their record signing Miguel Almiron and targeted loans for left backs in January such as Jordan Lukaku.

This deal could hinge on Rafa Benitez still being at the club as he clearly knows what positions he wants to strengthen in. Should Benitez sign a new deal the Benito could most definitely make the move to Newcastle to strengthen Benitez’ defensive options.

Another vital part is which club Benito would prefer to join and he has a number of them to choose from, the signature of Benitez would be vital to any move for the Swiss international.
