Ally McCoist has blasted Allan McGregor after the Rangers goalkeeper got himself suspended for the Old Firm clash with Celtic on Sunday due to kicking out at a Hibernian player last week.

Even though the Gers were cruising to a 1-0 victory against Hibs at Ibrox and he had moments earlier made a stunning save, McGregor earned his marching orders when he kicked out at Marc McNulty, seemingly unprovoked.

Ibrox legend McCoist is furious with the Scottish shot-stopper for ruling himself out of this weekend’s derby match and went on a rant about his lack of discipline on BT Sport 1 on Friday night.

“I have no idea what’s going through Allan’s head,” said McCoist on Scottish Football Extra on Friday [07:10pm]. “There have been signs all throughout the season that all isn’t right with Allan.

“There have been incidents, not as bad as that [kick at McNulty] but there’s been one or two issues where he’s left a trailing leg in or used his body to knock people down. I don’t know. It’s clearly not good enough.

“But that’s madness and it is indiscipline.

“He’s the number one goalkeeper and yet he’s missing the Old Firm game on Sunday which is totally unacceptable.

“And you can see from watching and listening to Steven Gerrard after it, he must be incredibly frustrated-stroke-angry with one or two of this players letting him and their team-mates down.”

OPINION

It was ridiculous by McGregor to get himself sent off against Hibernian last week and even though Wes Foderingham is a more than capable second-choice goalkeeper, Gerrard would have wanted all of his best players available for selection ahead of this weekend’s clash against Celtic at Ibrox. McGregor has been brilliant for the Gers this term but like Alfredo Morelos, he has let himself, his manager and his team-mates down with some really petulant behaviour. You can sort of let it slide a bit more with Morelos because he’s only 22-years-old but McGregor turned 37-years-old at the start of this year and has over 500 club appearances to his name as well as 42 caps for Scotland. It’s unacceptable that Gerrard should be reprimanding players like that for their discipline. McGregor needs to change his attitude next season because he’s lucky that he hasn’t fallen afoul of the disciplinary system than he actually has done.
