Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez is a “£17million option” for Tottenham in the summer transfer window, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claimed via their live transfer blog on Monday evening that Mauricio Pochettino wants to spruce up his squad before next season starts and that includes signing a young striker as back-up for Harry Kane.

It is understood that Fernando Llorente is heading for the exit after the deadline to extend his contract passed and the Spurs ace is already attracting interest from AC Milan, Roma, Valencia and Marseille.

The Mirror suggests that Celta’s Gomez is a potential replacement for Llorente after he enjoyed a decent season in La Liga.

Good move for Tottenham?

Although Celta Vigo just about avoided relegation from La Liga, Gomez had a good season on a personal level by scoring 13 goals and supplying five assists in 35 league appearances.

The Uruguay international scored in a 2-0 win against Spanish champions Barcelona earlier this month that all but sealed Celta’s safety in the top-flight.

He is young, he has a great record in front of goal and would definitely be a solid back-up option to Kane.

It is a shame that Llorente is set to move on but Spurs fans have to see Gomez as an exciting upgrade on the veteran Spaniard.

Likely to happen?

Daniel Levy would no doubt jump at the chance to sign Gomez for £17million, so this does seem like the type of deal that Tottenham could be striking in the summer.

Gomez has a good record in La Liga, he’s young, he’s relatively cheap and there is that South American connection with manager Maurcio Pochettino and several other players already in North London.

It remains to be seen what exact players Spurs will buy in the summer but after a year and a half of not signing anyone, they are bound to do a lot of business.
