Many Everton fans are split over whether England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd made the right decision in selecting the Toffees players that he has for the team’s European Championship campaign, which kicks off next month. The manager has picked Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jonjoe Kenny and Kieran Dowell for the squad but chose to leave out Ademola Lookman and Tom Davies. Lots of Everton fans have questioned Boothroyd’s decision to leave out Lookman, but he is exactly right to do that. The winger failed to impress since coming back to Everton last season, and did not score a single goal in 21 Premier League appearances. There are many others – such as Tammy Abraham and Harvey Barnes – who have had much better seasons and deserve the call-up more. The same can be said for Davies, who was in fact not included due to a shoulder injury, according to Times journalist Paul Joyce. Even so, he made 16 Premier League appearances for the Toffees last term but other midfielders like James Maddison and Phil Foden have enjoyed much better times at their respective clubs. But there are some Everton fans who can see sense in Boothroyd’s decision, which is definitely the right one.

Lookman really hasn’t pushed on. Davies has looked better under Silva but isn’t at the level we require.
