Leeds are intent on signing Southampton striker Sam Gallagher this summer, according to Football Insider.

Southampton have made the fringe star available for sale this summer, but Leeds will face competition from other Championship and Premier League clubs to sign the 6’ 3” target man.

The Lancashire Telegraph claim that Blackburn Rovers are looking to sign the striker permanently after he spent a season loan at Rovers in the 2016/17 campaign where he scored 12 goals.

Gallagher also 33 appearances and fired in six goals for Championship rivals Birmingham City in the 2017-18 campaign.

However, the Plymouth youth academy prospect made just four Premier League appearances from the bench last season and is not part of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s future plans.

Good move for Leeds?

Leeds need a striker and they don’t have a lot of money. If they could get Gallagher for around £4-5million, they’d be getting a young player who has made 26 appearances for Southampton and is still on the fringes of a decent side. Last season’s top-goal scorer Kemar Roofe finished 15 goals behind the eventual Championship leading scorer Teemu Pukki last season and Bielsa needs new attackers to compliment the ones he has. A player like Gallagher would be a gamble but could well be worth the risk. He’s had Championship experience, played for the England Under-20s and his career is in need of a boost.

Likely to happen?:

The report claims that Premier League sides are interested so it could come down to whether Gallagher is willing to drop down a division. However, he’s not getting game-time for Southampton and if he wants to play and needs to drop down a tier, where better than at Leeds under the expert tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa? Leeds fans might not be impressed by his stats but he can play out wide and through the middle and could be a good buy.
