Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla could return to Spain in the summer transfer window despite only joining the Whites in January, according to Sun reporter Alan Nixon.

The reliable journalist claimed via his personal Twitter account on Sunday that Leeds are in the hunt to sign a replacement for Casilla, as the 32-year-old’s stay at Elland Road might only be a brief one.

Casilla was the only first team player that Marcelo Bielsa signed in January 2019, but his performance in the second leg of the play-off semi-final defeat to Derby has raised serious questions about whether the ex-Real Madrid shot-stopper is good enough.

OPINION

Leeds will not feature in the play-off final on Monday, and that is mainly down to Casilla’s woeful performance at Elland Road against Derby County earlier this month. Bielsa’s men were two goals ahead on aggregate when he came rushing out of the goal for no reason to put pressure on Liam Cooper and to allow Jack Marriott to score a tap-in. Derby had not really been in the game up until that point, which sparked a comeback by the Rams, who will now play against Aston Villa in the play-off final at Wembley on Monday. Casilla has not been that much of an improvement on Bailey Peacock-Farrell, even though the Spanish goalkeeper was seen as quite the coup when he was signed in the winter transfer window. However he has failed to live up to expectations and fans should not be that bothered if he is moved on in the summer.
