Salomon Rondon has had a solid season on loan at Newcastle and Rafa Benitez has made it clear that he wants the striker at St James’ Park next season.

He is available for £16.5million after West Brom failed to win promotion to the Premier League.

However, they are now facing competition from Wolves after the Mail reported that Wolves had started talks with West Brom over a possible move.

And, according to Jim White, the midlands club are “very keen” on getting a deal done.

Talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Friday, 10am), the host said, “It is my understanding this morning that Wolves have jumped in and I’ve heard Wolves are very keen on getting the deal done.”

This spells bad news for Newcastle. If Wolves are very keen – and why wouldn’t they be at a cost of just £16.5million – they could easily swoop in and wrap up a deal before Mike Ashley has even concluded his talks with Benitez. That could have disastrous consequences on the Benitez talks as he’ll be very disappointed to lose out on a player who he fought to bring in on loan and who has proved himself at St James’ Park. As for Wolves, they’re a very attractive club to join at the moment, flying high in the Premier League last season and looking to push on with plenty of money in the bank. Raul Jimenez and Rondon up front would cause problems for any Premier League side. Rondon himself has said that he would like to stay at Newcastle, but if they don’t move to snap him up, he would surely be tempted by a club like Wolves who are “very keen” on him. Newcastle fans will be face-palming this morning after this news.
